Flip Phillips’ legal career has spanned over forty (40) years. Upon graduation from the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he was a member of the Mississippi Law Journal and president of the Law School Student Body, he returned to his hometown of Batesville to practice law.  Flip is a founding partner of the Smith Phillips Law Firm, and is currently the senior active partner of Smith, Phillips Mitchell, Scott & Nowak, LLP, with offices in Batesville and Hernando, Mississippi. Flip is a respected litigator who has handled cases throughout the nation. He has argued cases at all levels of the Mississippi judicial system, including numerous cases before the Mississippi Supreme Court.

Phillips is corporate counsel for Dunlap and Kyle Company, Inc. and has been City Attorney for the City of Batesville since 1978.  Early in his career, he was Municipal Judge for the City of Batesville and served as Assistant District Attorney for the 17th Judicial District. Members of his firm, Smith Phillips Mitchell Scott and Nowak, LLP, currently serve as Attorneys for the South Panola School District and as City Prosecutor for the City of Batesville, and as Attorneys for the Desoto County Board of Supervisors.  Phillips has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Dunlap and Kyle, Panola County Federal Savings and Loan Association and New South Bank. His firm also represents First Security Bank, Tallahatchie Valley Electric Power Association, multiple oil distributors and numerous large and small Mississippi businesses.

Extremely active in economic and business development, Phillips was President of the Panola County Industrial Development Foundation.  He received the Community Service Award for aggressive leadership in industrial development in Panola County. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Foundation, and is Attorney for Panola Partnership, the County’s current economic development entity. 

Phillips served in the Mississippi National Guard, as a member of the 108th Armored Calvary Regiment.
